I had the privilege of welcoming author and human rights activist Stella Pope Duarte to a Toastmasters Open House I chaired at work. As a young girl she was voted the shyest girl in school. Today she is a university professor and author of five books. One, If I Die in Juarez, earned a Pulitzer Prize nomination for highlighting a series of murders of young women in the Mexican city of Juarez. Her accomplishments are many, but she always goes back to her roots growing up in a South Phoenix barrio. Today she speaks all over the world. Thanks Stella for reminding us that everyone’s story needs to be told.

Stella is a treasure in our community. For someone shy she speaks with a loud voice. She cares about our humanity. Book is poignant.
